TORI 鳥

Solar-powered camera bird feeder

Can a bird feeder be more than a dull elevated seed holder?

Most bird feeders I've seen are highly industrial looking; seemingly lacking any real aesthetic design attention. Typically people have bird feeders so they can observe birds in their neighborhood from a distance. I wanted to enhance the home bird watching experience by developing a product that gives bird watchers a more intimate view of the birds.

Introducing,

TORI 鳥

meaning 'bird' in Japanese

Sleek, Yet Sturdy

TORI  is perfectly symmetrical. Its form resembles an umbrella where every part is positioned holistically within the design, each serving to complement both the aesthetic and functionality of the whole. TORI  is completely smooth, maximizing its aerodynamic performance against crosswinds.

Sun & Shade

A solar panel covers the roof the TORI ; acting to supply sustainable energy to the on-board electronics. This means that TORI  requires little to no maintenance by the owner when it comes to keeping it powered. With the rapidly decreasing cost of solar technology, placing a solar panel on the roof was a natural decision; simply me capitalizing on an obvious opportunity. The roof is designed to shade our little avian visitors, while keeping the bird feed dry.

Intuitively Designed Bird Feed Holder

A shiny clear glass is used to help owners gauge the amount of bird feed left in the TORI . It is designed round to enable birds flying in from all angles for their ease of use. Additionally, by placing the bird feed at the bottom, it keeps the center of gravity of the design low to help maintain stability during turbulent environmental conditions.

Detachable For Easy Re-Fill

Since the TORI   would likely be placed up high by their owners, I thought it'd be convenient to simply screw off the base to refill the device with bird feed instead of taking the whole thing down. If placed low enough, owners could simply just pour in more bird feed. As a bonus, bird feed can fill up the inner column, extending the TORI  's time of use before another refill is required.

Cameras For Pleasure & Security

A main feature of this design is its ability to capture high definition images of your neighborhood birds directly to your smart phone. Three wide-angle HD cameras are placed equidistant around the TORI  's inner column to capture birds coming from any side.  A secondary feature of TORI   is that it has the potential to be used as a security camera.
